Understanding UNPFII: A Global Platform for Indigenous Peoples: The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) is the central UN-level advisory body addressing the rights and concerns of Indigenous Peoples worldwide. Established on 28 July 2000 by ECOSOC Resolution 2000/22, UNPFII is mandated to deal with Indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health and human rights.

Composed of 16 independent experts (eight nominated by governments and eight by Indigenous organizations), UNPFII convenes annual sessions — offering a rare global forum where Indigenous leaders, communities, and stakeholders can engage with UN bodies, Member States, NGOs, and international institutions.

Through its work, UNPFII provides expert advice and recommendations to ECOSOC and UN agencies; raises awareness on Indigenous issues; promotes coordination across the UN system; and supports the full implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

The World Council of Indigenous Games (WIG) is dedicated to preserving Indigenous heritage, strengthening identity, and supporting the well-being of Indigenous communities worldwide. Through the revival and promotion of traditional Indigenous games, WIG advances cultural pride, youth empowerment, and global recognition of Indigenous rights — in harmony with the mandate of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII).

By documenting and promoting these practices globally, WIG supports the preservation of intangible cultural heritage and strengthens Indigenous cultural continuity.
2. Youth Empowerment & Health: WIG’s programs engage Indigenous youth in meaningful cultural activities that enhance physical fitness, mental well-being, and pride in their roots. These activities promote leadership, community participation, and positive identity formation.
3. Self-Determination & Inclusion: By enabling communities to revive and share their traditional games, WIG strengthens Indigenous self-determination and cultural autonomy. This work supports global efforts for rights recognition, inclusion, and intercultural respect.
4. Social Cohesion & Global Unity: WIG connects Indigenous communities across countries through events, exchanges, and collaborative networks, promoting solidarity, mutual respect, and international visibility for Indigenous issues.
5. Supporting Sustainable Development: WIG’s initiatives contribute to culturally grounded development—protecting heritage, improving well-being, and fostering inclusive social growth aligned with global frameworks such as UNPFII and the SDGs.

While UNPFII works at the level of global policy, advocacy, human rights frameworks, and high-level coordination, WIG brings those principles down to community level — through culture, sport, and grassroots engagement.
